How Does the Commission Process Work?
While the design and commissioning process can be as distinct and unique as the furniture being built, the following is generally a typical commission sequence.
When first considering having a piece of furniture designed and built, we suggest looking at the items displayed on our gallery floor, as well as our partner’s portfolios. This is a good way to see the quality of work as well as becoming familiar with each makers range of design and style. The Xylos member currently working the gallery is always available for suggestions. This partner can either begin working with you immediately or connect you with the right Xylos person to complete your project.
During the initial meeting, a rough idea of the scope of the project, materials, and budget are discussed. Once you and the craftsman are comfortable with the scope and budget, the furniture maker collects 10% of the estimated total cost as a design fee. This fee covers the cost of developing a refined design, final proposal, and an estimated delivery date. Depending on the project, there might also be some design options.
When the final design and budget is approved, 50% of the final cost is due to become entered into the maker’s schedule, materials ordered, and for construction to begin.
The balance of the total cost plus applicable sales tax is collected when
the finished piece is picked up, delivered, or installed.
